KIM RICHEY
+ ALEX BERGER + MARK WYNN
PLEASE NOTE
THAT THIS SHOW IS NOW SOLD OUT
Will
this woman ever stop producing great records? It would appear not... Kim
Richey's new album 'Wreck Your Wheels' contains six songs that grab
you straight away and a further five that sneak up on you while you aren't
looking and make you adore them before you know what's happened. It's
talent like that which makes it easy to think we could put Kim on every
month and get a full house every time.
As if Kim Richey
solo wasn't enough, we suspect she will be joined for this gig by Jez
Ashurst on guitar as well as the Danish bass-monster, Henrik Irgens. We
saw this line-up in Camden Town a few weeks back and have had a warm,
fuzzy feeling about it ever since. Half of the tickets for this show have
already (i.e. 31st July) been sold, so click that link on the left before
you miss the chance.
Alex
Berger is one of those musicians that defies description, really.
Torch songs, jaunty jazz sing-a-longs, material that could have been
written by Cole Porter next to tunes that Randy Newman would be proud
of.
British, but
somewhat of a king-pin in the New York scene that we often trumpet, Alex's
enthusiasm is very infectious and when he's not playing he is organising
charity concerts and writers' retreats for the many talents that The Big
Apple has to offer.
We're not sure if we
dreamed it, but we're pretty sure he mentioned bringing a string quartet
along to accompany his passionate, strident piano playing and mellifluous
vocals. Now that would be a treat.
With
named influences such as Townes Van Zandt, Big Bill Broonzy and Hank
Williams, you know pretty much what you're going to get from Mark Wynn.
His guitar and vocal styles are unnervingly similar to the late, great Van
Zandt and he's clearly been drawing his inspiration largely from the
American folk tradition.
But this lad from
York ("Old York" perhaps tonight, to properly avoid confusion!)
writes a mean song and plays with a relaxed gusto which suggests that
despite appearances, he is in fact an old hand. You can imagine him
busking on a rainy city afternoon, on strings that are more rust than
steel, playing for the love and experience of it as well as to earn enough
cash to buy a pastie and some new strings. That's why we've booked him,
the boy's got soul coming out of every pore. You don't get that just by
copying.
